FAQ

Have Any Questions?

1. What is compostable bioplastic ? Is it the same as plastic ?

Compostable bioplastic is a type of plastic-like material made from renewable biological sources—such as corn starch, sugarcane, potato starch or other biodegradable material that is designed to break down in composting conditions into natural elements like water, carbon dioxide, and biomass within 80 - 180 days once composted.

  • Conventional plastic is derived from fossil fuels and can take hundreds of years to break down.Compostable bioplastics are made from plant-based sources and are meant to decompose much faster. Compostable bioplastics must meet specific standards (like EN 13432 or ASTM D6400) to be labeled compostable.

2. Are compostable plastics edible ?

Great question! Compostable plastics are not meant to be edible, even though they are made from plant-based materials like corn starch or sugarcan.

  • While they may be made from food sources, compostable plastics (like PLA or PHA) are processed chemically into plastic-like materials.
  • They often contain additives, dyes, or other chemicals that are not safe for human consumption. Biodegradable ≠ Edible
  • Something that breaks down naturally (biodegradable or compostable) isn't automatically safe to eat.
  • Think of paper—it's biodegradable, but you wouldn't want to eat it.

3. Are Nemistar products 100% compostable ?

At Nemistar, we believe sustainability should never be a compromise. That’s why all our products are 100% compostable, designed to break down naturally and return to the earth within 180 days —safely and responsibly.

4. What Does “100% Compostable” Mean?

  • Certified compostable to meet Indian & international standards such as ISO 17088, EN 13432 and ASTM D6400. The manufacturer should be also approved by CPCB ( Central pollution control board ) to manufacture compostable bio-plastic.
  • Breaks down completely within weeks under the right composting conditions
  • Plastic-free, petroleum-free, and made from renewable resources
  • Safe for people, safe for the planet

5. Are your products safe for food contact? Do they dissolve in water or melt easily?

Our compostable products are food-safe and comply with regulations for direct contact with food and beverages. They’re durable during use. While they break down in composting environments, they’re designed to hold up under typical use conditions like holding hot liquids or packaging food.
